Lucy - in need of a happy ending

Lucy has been at BARC for over a year now, and although she receives all the care and attention we can give her, it's just not the same as having a loving home. We cannot understand why she is still with us. Poor Lucy gets overlooked, she is a middle ages girl but you wouldn't know it...she really has a zest for life!!!

She loves to play and loves nothing more than a cuddle with the volunteers.

Lucy longs for a loving home to call her own...he new owner would be very lucky to have her in their life...if you would like to meet Lucy it is very easy...just pop up to BARC or call on 2596 3733.....she would be so happy to meet you!

New Facebook page!!!

As facebook is archiving some of the facebook groups we have had to make a new facebook page...please add BARC as your friend and you can see pics of the cats and dogs waiting for homes and keep up to date with news from the centre.

This story is worth reading!

Back in 1998 I was serving as the OC JSHU (Cyprus) based in Akrotiri. There may not be anyone in BARC who remembers Tucker the dog I adopted, but since he was an unusual and unique animal, I thought I would let you know what happened to him. Tucker was a Cyprus Pointer and chocolate brown in colour. The BARC staff at the time told me he had been abandoned on a roadside somewhere before being rescued and taken to their kennels. He had obviously been in some sort of serious accident as he had a large, livid scar down his back (from an operation – so someone must have cared about him enough to pay for it). His back legs were not as strong as they should be and his tail was crooked (didn’t stop it constantly wagging though)! The kennel staff thought he was about 2 years old and also said he’d be lucky to survive a couple of years because of his injuries. Anyway I was hooked and duly adopted him. The minute he got home he leapt onto the couch and made himself at home – and the Campbell household really was home for the next 13 years - despite BARC’s predictions! Tucker had several unique character traits – he hated cats, loved to chase shadows, follow torch lights and reflections. The whole family loved him and his antics were a source of great amusement to us all. After 2 years in Cyprus I was posted back to the UK. What to do with Tucker? The quarantine laws had not been relaxed at this point – the Pet Passport Scheme was due to start some 6 months after our move back to Blighty. I wasn’t about to leave him behind but nor did I want to subject him to 6 months in quarantine kennels. Luckily another family agreed to look after him until the passport scheme was in force and in June 2000, Tucker became the first dog to enter the UK from Cyprus without going to quarantine!

When I left the Army in 2001 we moved to Argyll and then a year later moved again to Bonnybridge, so Tucker was certainly getting lots of stamps in his passport so to speak. All this time he was a fit and active dog. I took him and Shadow (a black Labrador we got in 2001 as Tucker appeared to be slowing down) running and the entire family took the dogs on numerous long walks. Tucker’s travels were not over yet. At the grand old age of 11 he joined all of us in a major move to New Zealand and it is not an exaggeration to say that we all suspected he might not endure the flight and that if he did he may not last long in NZ. How wrong we were! Tucker came out of his crate in Wellington Airport Cargo shed completely unphased again! His first action was to mark his territory much to the annoyance of a particularly miserable female staff member! Tucker settled really well and was still enjoying long family walks until his age started to get the better of him during 2010. Sadly by the end of the year he was getting slower and slower and rarely managed to walk beyond the garden. The mind was willing but the body wasn’t able. Since January 2011 we could see that he was failing and we just wanted to make him as comfortable as possible for what turned out to be his final few months. Since 1st April he really did go downhill fast and by the weekend of 9/10 April his weight loss and general lethargy meant the difficult decision was imminent. So it was that on Monday 11 April Tucker left us. He will be sorely missed.

Big Cats help small cats (and dogs!)

Willing volunteers from D Company, 2 LANCS 'The Lions Of England' very kindly gave up their time and braved the bad weather to help with some much needed maintenance work.

The lads from D Company very kindly cut back bushes around the kennels and catteries and cleared away rubbish...the whole place now looks a lot smarter.
Some of the lads took time out to sit with the animals....it certainly brightened up their day!

BARC would like to thank 2LANCS for their support and wish them well with their move to Weeton this Summer.....many returning with BARC cats and dogs!

Alf's Story

Alf was brought to BARC through no fault of his own and was the sweetest dog you could ever meet, he loved to go for walks and play fetch with his tennis ball and also got on very well with the dogs at BARC. Alf was sadly overlooked at BARC and spent many months waiting to be chosen. We were lucky enough to be helped by a Germany charity who advertised him on their website. He didn't have to wait long for someone to fall in love with him and on the 14th October he made the journey to his new forever home.

Alf is now living the good life on a farm, has a new four legged friend to hang out with and all the grass he could ever want (a rare thing in Cyprus). His new family sent us some photos of Cody as he is now called and I'm sure you'll agree he looks very content....and we are all so very pleased for him.

Waggy Walk raises much needed funds

A huge thank you and WELL DONE to all the walkers who took their four legged friends on a 10K walk all to raise funds for BARC.
The new Friends of BARC Chairperson, Wendy Rayner organised the walk and enlisted the help of many of our volunteers to take part on the day. Some of the dogs walked are BARC dogs all waiting for loving homes. Everyone enjoyed the walk especially the dogs! They started at 6am and returned just in time to beat the rain!

An amazing amount was raised by all the walkers....around 500 euros but with sponsor money still coming in, this could rise!
All the dogs at BARC need to be walked every day and we are in need of more caring people to help. If you would like to become a dog walker please call 2596 3733

World Cup fun at BARC

The sun was shining down on BARC this Saturday as the World Cup fun day took place. The morning was kicked off with Roary The Lion in his England football shirt to entertain kids and adults alike...he tried his luck at the penalty shoot out and did rather well for a Lion! There were plenty of stalls to keep visitors occupied and and lots of footy themed games to get involved with.
CJPU very kindly opened their bar for visitors on the day which was very much appreciated. A super raffle with wonderful prizes rounded off the day.
The staff and volunteers all worked really hard to make the day a success and a total of 700 euros was raised, which will all go towards looking after the many Cats and Dogs at BARC.
A huge thank you to all that helped and attented on the day...let's hope the next event is an even bigger success!

Please take time to visit the Nowzad Dogs website and learn more about the work of a few dedicated volunteers. The Afghan rescue centre they work closely with is always desperate for basic items such as collars, leads and worming tablets. If you can send a small package out it would be gratefully received. Happily ever after...

Look at these two...like peas in a pod! Bella the Beagle has recently been rehomed to Clare and Jim in Episkopi. They already had a dog they rehomed from Canada and brought with them called Macy. Even though they differ in sizes they play beautifully together and have become inseperable. Long may they be happy!!!

Happy Tail!

Everyone loves a happy ending and Derek who has recently been rehomed from BARC has found his! His new owners saw him on our website before they had even arrived in Cyprus and fell in love with him. When they arrived they came to visit Derek a number of times and brought their existing dog, Ben with them. We're happy to say Derek is loving his new life with his adopted brother Ben and they are getting along extremely well.

If you have rehomed a dog from BARC we always love to see photos of them and an update as to how they are doing.

2 LANCS'S very own Roary the Lion has been given the pampered pet treatment and now has a Pet Passport!

The 2LANCS welfare office wanted to make sure that Roary is ready to leave when the battalion return to the UK in 2011…one less thing to worry about when the time comes to say goodbye to Cyprus.
